Ruby has been one of the world's most valued gemstones for thousands of years. The name comes from the Latin word ruber meaning "red color". In the Judaeo·Christian view, the ruby is the most precious of the twelve stones God created when he created all creatures, and this "lord of gems" was placed on the high priest's neck by God's command. Ruby was said to preserve wealth and remove evil thoughts. Rubies come in many shades of red. Sometimes people refer to the finest pure red color as "Burma ruby" or "pigeon's blood'". Rubies over 3ct very fine quality are very scarce. Christie's sold an "exceptionally rare" Burmese ruby for $18 million at its Magnificent Jewels auction in Hong Kong. setting a world auction record for a ruby of $1.2 million per carat.
